Islands are normally in oceans. But there can be islands in rivers too.

And did you know world’s biggest river island is in India?

The river island is named Majuli, found in Assam on the river Brahmaputra.

Its area is 800 kms more than 150,000 people live on this island.

This island was formed around the 1750’s when the Brahmaputra and one of its tributaries Dihing, that used to flow parallel, merged together.

This was because of an extreme flood. Tourists visit this island to see migratory birds. If you want to visit, you can’t travel by road because obviously there are no roads to it.

You will need to take a ferry.

Unfortunately, due to climate change, this island has kept shrinking over the years.

When the Himalayan glaciers melt, the chances of flash floods in this river increase.

And according to a News 18 report, about 60% of the land of this island has already been washed out by the river.
