Asia’s first green village
Asia’s first green village – Do you know that in Nagaland, near the India- Myanmar Border, 22kms from Kohima, there is a village Khonoma.
This is Asia’s first green village.
Its special because the tribe living in this village used to be a hunting tribe. Hunting festival used to be celebrated where young men would be awarded status based on who could hunt more animals.
Once in the early 1990’s, in a similar festival in this village, within a week, more than 300 endangered Blyth’s Tragopans were hunted. It’s a bird species, it is actually the state bird of Nagaland.
The villagers realized that they couldn’t live sustainably like that. Their village community leader started a campaign to create a protected area with a ban on hunting and deforestation.
It wasn’t easy to convince all, but after 5 years of hard work, the Khonoma Natural Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary was built in the village in 1998.
Hunting was banned and the villagers who were dependent on hunting chose to shift to farming.
And local arts and handicrafts were also focused on.
Today, Khonoma is very popular for handwoven bamboo baskets.
