Did you know that you are not allowed to tip in CHINA!!!

Did you know that you are not allowed to tip in CHINA!!! Every country has some strange customs that you should know about so you don’t offend anyone. In France don’t blow your nose in public especially with handkerchief. French people find this gross. In Japan it is super rude if you don’t finish all the food on your plate  But in Thailand or China it is rude if you do finish your food  In Finland standing with your arms crossed is super arrogant it could even get you in a fight if you do it in a bar. In Italy don’t cut your pasta drink cappuccino after lunch or put pineapple on Pizza if you don’t want to make life long enemies. In China never ever tip it might get the waiter in trouble with their employer because it implies they are not paid well enough. Every country has some little things they are sensitive about. But don’t worry if you are a good person you will make friends anywhere because kindness is the one language that everybody understands.

Two Monks story….

Two Monks story…. Two monks were going somewhere and they reach a river to cross it. There was a women near the river who asks for their help to cross the river.  So without any hesitation, the senior monk says, come and sit on my shoulder and I will get you across. The junior monk gets a little shaken by hearing this, because a vow is taken in the monks that they will never go close to women or touch them, so he was little shaken. But the senior monk crosses the river, drops the women, and moves on. Junior monk is still shaken, so he can’t help but ask, how did you touch that lady? Then the senior monk says, I left that women on the other side of the river but you are still carrying her in your mind? If you have moved on from a situation, but your feelings are still the same, then you have not moved on, you are just where you were.

Do you know that heels were not worn by women but were worn by men!

Do you know that heels were not worn by women but were worn by men! Heels were originated in the 15th Century in Persia so that they could maintain balance while riding a horse. With this balance, any soldier could easily attack their enemies. In 1599, Persian diplomats travelled to Europe and the people of Europe saw that Persian boys had worn heels and then this became famous in Europe, be it a rich person or a common man everyone started to wear heels and the elite wore such heels that were longer than usual so that they looked more dominating. There was also a time when women would also want to dress up like men they would cut their hair short, and would wear hats. In that time period, both men and women would wear heels. In 17th century enlightenment movement started in Europe because of which, fashion for men changed completely, where practical things were given more importance because of which, men stopped wearing heels and now heels are only worn by women.

Did you know that the longest running ad-campaign in the world is by Amul!!!

Did you know that the longest running ad-campaign in the world is by Amul!!! It was created in 1967 and the reason behind it was that Amul’s competitor back then Polson had a Polson Girl for marketing their butter. Its been years since Polson stopped making butter, but Amul’s famous campaign, utterly, Butterly, Delicious” continues even today. Apart from this, their campaign “Amul Dhoodh Pita Hai India” has been running for 18 years, and “Amul the taste of India” for 28 years. Their marketing stratergy is so effective that everyone recognizes the character.  But shockingly, Amul dosent even spend 1% of its revenue on marketing!!! By comparison, the companies in similar fields spend 8 to 15% on marketing. Perhaps the key to success is to continue using what works. One shouldn’t needlessly spend on creating new concepts.  There are many lessons to be learned from Amul’s success story.

Did you know that rats have a special superpower?

Did you know that rats have a special superpower? Humans can train rats to detect dangerous and explosive mines.  Yes, that’s Right… A Belgium Organization Research Organization APOPO was the first to get the idea. They were established in 1997, and since then, their rats have unearthed more than 13,200 mines from the minefields across several countries. Dogs can also be trained to detect mines, but rats are advantageous as they require less training. They require lesser maintenance and food as compared as dogs. African Giant pouch rat is believed to be the best at this. They weigh so little that even when they get close to it, the mine wouldn’t blast.  Such a heroic rat was MAGWA in Cambodia it detected many bombs by sniffing. In a tennis court-sized area, a rat takes 20 minutes to detect all the landmines. It would take 4 days for a human to detect these with a metal detector.

3 Enemies of Success…

3 Enemies of Success… The first biggest enemy is comfort zone. The comfort zone is were people become comfortable doing what they are doing and they don’t like to change. 80% of the population finds reasons not to change. Even if they change can be positive or beneficial.  The second thing which holds people back is called learned helplessness. This is were people feel I cant do it.  And the third enemy is what we call the path of least resistance which is always looking for an easy way to achieve a result. But nothing worthwhile can be achieved easily.

Svalbard - Visa not required

Around 800kms to the North of Norway there is a island called Svalbard. The special thing is that to live or work here, you don’t require a visa. It might be the only such place on earth. If you want to permanently settle here all you need is a job and a place to stay on the island. You’re allowed to live there. There is no need to apply for visa. In Svalbard’s capital Longyearbyen only 2,400 people live. This is the reason why 1/3rd of them are immigrants. They’re from 50 different countries. But if you’re seriously interested, keep one thing in mind – the place is extremely cold. Winter temperatures can reach upto -20 degree Celsius. In summers, it dosent go beyond 10 degree Celsius. Also, if you’re travelling outside the city you need to carry a rifle on you as the population of polar bears here is more than humans, in comparison. Also, keep in mind if something happens to you – if you get hurt or get sick, then there are no hospitals here. You’ll have to go to mainland Norway ...

To do list-----

They did a study of 50 CEO’s of the successful companies and they asked them what is the very best time management or business tool that you have ever discovered? 49/50 held up a yellow writing pad and this is what they did this is how they planned their day and made a list to do list today. They wrote down everything they had to do they always work from a list. If you don’t work from a list it’s very much like taking your hands of the wheel of your car going down a winding road in the mountains. What happens is your life’s going to go up and you’re instantly going to start doing irrelevant and unimportant and useless things and at the end of the day you’ll be exhausted and you accomplished nothing!!!!

Do you know that there is a lake in Denmark that looks like the world map?

Do you know that there is a lake in Denmark that looks like the world map? Spread over 4,000 sq meters, made out of map and stones, an actual world Map! The name of the lake is KLEJTRUP, and when you walk around it, you will see the flags of all the countries. This entire thing has been made by just one farmer – SOREN POULSEN, A Danish Farmer. He got the idea for this in 1943 and it took 25 years to complete. But the process was simple- when the lake was frozen, he used to place the rocks in the shape of continents. When summer come, the ice used to melt and these rocks sank and settled in the lake. After doing this repeatedly for years these rocks accumulated on top each other in the same shape and this beautiful thing was formed.  This map was completed in 1969 but many nations were born after that like Montenegro in 2006 and south Sudan in 2011. There is a team of this park that updates this map every year as and when new nations are formed.

Then in the market research they found that competition was also selling coconut oil in square shaped plastic containers but it was failed due to rats. Rats were easily accessible to square shaped containers and bit the containers and oil used to spill in retailers shop.  That’s the reason Parachute designed cylindrical bottle were rats couldn’t climb the bottle. It was a massive success but lot of copy cats came in the market to capture Parachute market. So Harsh Mariwala had a imported mold maker and made the bottle with drop like mold and differentiate with other copycat competitors. That mold has become Parachute coconut oil bottle identity.

Apsara & Nataraj Pencils – How they fooled you!

Apsara & Nataraj Pencils – How they fooled you! As a child, did you prefer Nataraj Pencils or Apsara pencils? You might be shocked to know that both of these pencils belonged to the same company. Hindustan Pencils made both these pencils.  This type of corporate strategy is known as a multi-brand strategy.  The same company develops multiple brands in the same sectors to target different sections of consumers.  While promoting, Apsara pencils were promoted as extra dark pencils while nataraj pencils were considered to be economic.  Many companies use this strategy Dove and Lifebuoy soaps both belong to Hindustan Levers. Porsche and Volkswagen Cars both belong to the Volkswagen group.  This disadvantage of this strategy is that it is cost intensive to maintain both brands.  Many times the brand start competing against each other, but the same strategy is used by media organisations as well to appease people of different ideologies.

How you start your day can either set you up to success or sabotage you.

How you start your day can either set you up to success or sabotage you. When you first wake up your brain is in malleable & changeable state. It’s impressionable. When you check your phone first thing whether looking at social media or checking emails you trigger your brain into “alert” mode especially if you happen to come across something negative. Shawn Anchor’s research found that just 3 minutes of negative news in the morning can ruin your mood for the entire day putting you on edge & magnifying your own personal anxieties. This undermines your performance. The first 20 minutes of your day can set you up for success.  Practices of peak performers include a morning routine which can have things like gratitude, prayer, meditation, mindfulness, exercise and even affirmations or visualization. Choose a routine that works for you & you will notice the difference.

Why does Red Bull give you WIIINGS!!!

Why does Red Bull give you WIIINGS!!! Red Bull’s tagline is “Red Bull gives you WIIINGS” Not WINGS its WIIINGS with 3 i! Do you know why? There is an interesting reason. About 20 years ago, the slogan had normal WINGS with single i Then in America, a consumer sued the company claiming to the court that the company was lying. After drinking Red Bull for 10 Years, he didn’t grow any wings.  The company was lying. A case of false advertising. The judge found it to be a sensible argument. Red Bull lost the case. And the court awarded USD$ 13 million as compensation to be paid by Red Bull to the customers who purchased a can of Red Bull between 2002 to 2014 in America. They were entitled to a USD $ 10 cash payout. It was an embarrassing loss for the company.  After this, Red Bull decided to change their slogan. Red Bull Gives you WINGS was replaced with Red Bull Gives you WIIINGS Now if someone is upset for not growing wings, Red Bull can defend themselves because they don’t ...

Why prices end with Rs.99?

Why prices end with Rs.99? Have you ever wondered while shopping why do prices always end with a 9? Buying a new T-Shirt? Rs. 599. Ordering a Pizza? Rs.399? Recharging your phone? Rs.799? Why aren’t the prices rounded off? People are habituated to reading from left to right. So in the shop, when we are taking a quick look at the prices, we focus on the first digit.  If the price is Rs.799, we might imagine it to be closer to Rs.700. even though the actual price is around Rs.800. Its been proven scientifically.  In a 2012 study, it was found, that on the stock market, the shares priced at a round number aren’t preferred much. But the stocks, that are a cent lesser, are brought excessively.  Another interesting reason was seen in a 2014 IIM Bangalore study, that Indian consumers assume that things whose price ends that things whose price ends with a 9 have a higher value. As compared to something whose price ends with a 0. There is a perception that it is of a higher ...

If brands don’t listen to you, build a brand.

If brands don’t listen to you, build a brand. The guy whose las name is Lamborghini, he wasn’t a car manufacturer.  He was a man who owned tractors.  But he drove Ferraris. And he went up to the Ferrari man because he knew something about engine parts. He made a suggestion to the Ferrari man about how his cars could be a little better. And the man who drove the Ferrari, who owned the Ferrari Company looked at the tractor man and said “Your advice is not important”.  Because see sometimes you don’t understand that there are Ferrari people now. But you have a Lamborghini destiny. And what he did is instead of arguing with the man who owned Ferrari he went and created the Lamborghini and fixed what was broken in the Ferrari.  And then let me tell you something. Some of you all keep arguing with Ferrari. Would you just become Lamborghini? The only reason who Lamborghini is here now is because he did what Ferrari wouldn’t listen to.

And Sir Jamsetji Tata they willed all their wealth to charity.  And do you know one thing the Tata cancer Hospital in Bombay every child who comes to Bombay is examined by them. If they feel they can cure it, they give free treatment. The Indian cancer society gives medicines. Now they are setting up a cancer hospital in every district, in every headquarters in India. Who set up India’s first Steel plant? First five start hotel in India? First power plant in India? First Software Company in India? First car manufacturing company in India? Who set up the Indian Institute of Sciences in India? Who set up the Tata’s ? So it a role model of what is wealth? They are creating wealth for the good of the society. What a great, Greater Noble aim can a human have?

Talk less in meetings

By talking too much in a meeting or in any kind of situation, you make people inadvertently smell weakness on you. A lot of communication between humans is nonverbal. We feel we sense something from you and it communicates and we have impression. And people who talk a lot generally give an impression of they don’t know how to control themselves.  Whereas people who kind of say little bit less can speak in riddles, almost say, you know, that’s great. I will think about it, or whatever gives off an impression of power they know more than they actually do, because the game of power a lot of it has to do with appearances. Inevitably they had that quality they knew how to control their tongue.  The other thing is if you talk too much to inevitably say something stupid.

Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela across the world is universally regarded as a great leader. He was actually the son of a tribal chief, and he was asked one day, how did you learn to be a great leader? And he responded that he would go with his father to tribal meetings. And he remembers two things when his father meet with other elders. One, they would always sit in a circle. And two, his father was always the last to speak. We see in boardrooms every day of the week. Even people who consider themselves good leaders who may actually be decent leaders will walk into a room and say, here is the problem.  Here is what I think but I am interested in your opinion. Let us go around the room. It’s too late. The skill to hold your opinions to yourself until everyone has spoken does two things. One, it gives everybody else the feeling that they have been heard. And two, you get the benefit of hearing what everybody else has to think, before you render your opinion.

Hippopotamus is the world’s deadliest land mammal

The Hippopotamus is the world’s deadliest land mammal, killing around 500 people annually in Africa. Their height is about 1.6 meters and their weight is about 3200 kilograms. These creatures are known to be aggressive and territorial. They are mostly herbivores but can be dangerous to humans if they feel threatened. They are great swimmers and can stay submerged for up to 5 min with their eyes and ears and nostrils on the top of the head hippos can hear, see and breathe while most of their body is under water. Put your phone away during meetings!!!!!

If you are trying to focus and you leave your phone on your desk, even if it is facing down and on silent, it negatively affects your cognitive capacity – you don’t perform as well and struggle to focus. This was found in a 2017 study ( Ward, Duke, Gneezy and Bos, 2017 ) The same principle applies if you are in a meeting with someone and you leave your phone on the table you subconsciously communicate that you are only going to be present with that person. Unless and until something “more important” catches your attention on your phone. The moral of the story – if you want to focus or show others that you are fully present with them –  PUT YOUR PHONE AWAY.

Trees do social distancing......

How do you do social distancing? Today, all of us know this. But did you know that there are some plants and trees in the world that maintain social distancing among each other. In some forests, if you look towards the sky, you will be able to see some trees have gaps between the leaves of the two trees. The leaves look like a jigsaw puzzle. They fit properly beside each other, but would never touch each other.  This is known as Crown Shyness. This is mostly seen in the same species of trees. Such as the Black Mangrove Tree, Eucalyptus, Camphor. There are many theories for this behavior of the trees.  One theory claims that this is the trees way of social distancing, so that diseases aren’t spread from one tree to the other. If one gets an infection, the other is protected.  The second theory claims that it is to permit the light to enter so that the photosynthesis isn’t disrupted. But the most likely theory is that these trees do not wish to harm each other. Crown ...

A FISH that is not made from FISH!!!!

A FISH that is not made from FISH!!!!  Ofek realized that we were running out of fish in the ocean, so he decided to do something about it.  He found the 3 smartest people in Isreal and together they built a machine that can print food. It copies the fish molecules using plant molecules and they made the printer and the molecules work perfectly together to create the world’s first cooked salmon fillet made entirely out of plants. It has zero cholesterol and lots of omegas. But it doesn’t have any mercury or micro plastic or antibiotics and this is just the first version. In the future we will be able to eat a fish that is 10 times more delicious than a normal fish without touching the ocean. And that is exciting!!!
