Did you know that rats have a special superpower?
Humans can train rats to detect dangerous and explosive mines.
Yes, that’s Right…
A Belgium Organization Research Organization APOPO was the first to get the idea. They were established in 1997, and since then, their rats have unearthed more than 13,200 mines from the minefields across several countries.
Dogs can also be trained to detect mines, but rats are advantageous as they require less training. They require lesser maintenance and food as compared as dogs. African Giant pouch rat is believed to be the best at this. They weigh so little that even when they get close to it, the mine wouldn’t blast.
Such a heroic rat was MAGWA in Cambodia it detected many bombs by sniffing. In a tennis court-sized area, a rat takes 20 minutes to detect all the landmines. It would take 4 days for a human to detect these with a metal detector.
