As 264,000
gallons of water gushed out of the 82-foot-high aquarium on Friday morning,
glass and other debris were swept out of the structure, which also contains a
hotel and cafes.
A huge
aquarium in a hotel in Berlin, Germany, that was filled with thousands of
tropical fish, has erupted.
In the
Radisson Blu's lobby on Friday, December 16, a massive aquarium with a million
liters of water broke, wreaking havoc on the hotel and the streets around it.
According to
BBC news, the 14-meter-tall AquaDom is the largest free-standing circular fish
tank in the world and is home to 1,500 tropical fish from over 100 different
species.
Visitors
claimed that they heard a loud noise, like a thunderclap, and at first believed
that a bomb had gone off since glass and other debris were hurled across the
lobby.
The
attraction, which debuted in December 2003, is handled by SeaLife, which also
manages venues across the world. More than 100 different fish species may be
found in the aquarium.
SeaLife
announced on its website on Friday that the aquarium, which holds the Guinness
World Record for being the largest circular aquarium in the world, was
temporarily closed and urged guests to reschedule their tickets.
The aquarium
has been severely damaged and there is debris all over the scene. The hotel's
lobby has also sustained significant damage, forcing guests to vacate the
property.
At least two
individuals have been hurt, according to Berlin Police, in the incident that
resulted in "incredible maritime damage," per DW News.
Emergency
responders were unable to enter the building's ground floor because of the
debris there, according to a Berlin fire department official. According to
Metro, they also mentioned that rescue dogs were being sent to the location.
Although
authorities have stated that the cause of the event is still under
investigation, Daily Mail reports that there is speculation that the recent
freezing weather led to the leak.
A popular
tourist destination in Berlin is the aquarium, which underwent its most recent
renovation in 2020. The most well-known feature of the hotel was the 10-minute
elevator ride inside the cylindrical tank's center.
Around 350
hotel guests were asked to collect their belongings and evacuate the property
as a result of the horrific tragedy.
Buses were
rushed to the resort to give shelter for visitors leaving the hotel, albeit
Berlin is only approximately -7 degrees, according to Daily Mail.
Additionally,
due to the massive amount of water that had burst out of the building,
emergency officials had to close a road that runs next to the structure and
connects Alexanderplatz with the Brandenburg Gate.
