In Australia’s small Raine Island, scientist found that 99% of the young turtles were females.

And 87% of the mature turtles were female.

The gender ratio among the turtles has deteriorated so terribly, that for every male, there were 116 female turtles.

How?

Climate change is said to be the reason.

The gender of the fetus among creatures like sea turtles depends on the temperature. 

If the sand where the eggs are laid hotter than 29 deg centigrade, then the chances of having females rise significantly. 

And if the sand reaches 33 deg centigrade, then 100% of the eggs would hatch into female turtles.

With the rising temperatures due to climate change, more and more sea turtles are born female.

A process know as Feminization. This is a threat to the turtles.

Because the worsening ratio makes breeding difficult.

Resulting in a dwindling population.
