A problem in the disposal of their dead.

Parsi’s have a unique system of disposal of dead bodies called Dokhmenashini.

They don’t practice burial or cremation because they consider the elements of fire and earth to be sacred.

So, they rely on nature to dispose of dead bodies.

They leave the dead body in the open to be eaten and decomposed by vultures.

Such places are called The Tower of Silence.

In the past 15 years, the population of vultures in India has declined by 99%.

In normal circumstances, vultures would take only half an hour to scavenge the body.

But due to the decline in the population of vultures, it takes longer for the dead bodies to decompose.

This results in the emanation of a strong stench around the tower of silence.

Doctors have also warned of the health hazards of the practice.

This implies that Parsi’s would no longer be able to practice this vital part of their culture.
